Hand spinning wool...
After a fresh fleece has been washed and dried, I use my wool combs to organize wool fibers into a fluffy and
manageable roving.  I spin from the combed roving.
When I first started spinning wool as a hobby, I used a hand spindle.  Once I learned to create enough twist to keep
the yarn together, I graduated to a Lendrum spinning wheel.

Some people don't start with a handspindle; they go directly to using a spinning wheel. In the handspinner's
community, there are handspindle afficionados who collect very beautifully handcrafted spindles and continue to use a
handspindle to create their yarn.  A spindle is very portable and fun to use, so I think it's a great way to learn! There
are many varieties of handspindles, depending upon what material was being spun (cotton to wool) and where in the
world the spindle was developed. Of course, you can undertake your own research by Googling "handspindle" ... to
see what a Turkish spindle looks like, and how Navajo spindles are used.
